  • Drogba being in the list is unjustified. On Africa performance, Mikel one on one with Ivorian Star studded team took over the midfield and damage ivorians @ the nations cup.

  • Former Nigeria national team media officer and football analyst Colin Udoh chimes in on the long held belief that no African player has won the BBC African Footballer of the Year and the CAF title in the same year. Yaya Toure is the reigning BBC POTY.

“There is always a first for everything. But the truth is that either Mikel or Yaya deserves to be named as Africa’s best. They were superb in the year under review. As a Nigerian I want Mikel Obi to be the winner,” Udoh told Goal.

  • Ode to the Forgotten Ones:

Burkina Faso coach Paul Put (who is up for Coach of the Year award) has spoken of his disappointment at Jonathan Pitroipa's absence from the top three.

“I am very disappointed that [Jonathan] Pitroipa couldn’t make the top three despite his exploits at the AFCON. Anyway, I think his major undoing was not playing for a top European side,” Put told Goal's Shina Oludare.

  • Mikel faced yaya in the afcon and DEFEATED him!
Mikel spurred his country to wining afcon (NOTE: Yaya has never ever spurred his country to win a trophy)
Mikel almost single handedly sank Uruguay in a match in which all his other team mates where lost (NOTE: Uruguay is one of the top teams in the WORLD)
Yaya's only achievement in 2013 is playing a major part in his club (Note: His club won NO trophy in 2013 but Mikel's club won, even though mikel did not play the final, he was a part of the process to the final)
If this was a trophy based majorly on club performances it will DEFINITELY be Yaya but its a CAF award for AFRICA a place in which Yaya is yet to prove himself but MIKEL has.

  • Did you know that in its 22 years of existence, the CAF African Player of the Year award has been won by players from only nine African countries? Ghana, Cote D'Ivoire, Mali, Cameroon, Senegal, Liberia, Nigeria, Togo and Morocco (the only non-West African victory).

  • Ivoirian television analyst Mamadou Gaye has spoken to our correspondent Shina Oludare about his choice for the award. Hear him

“As an Ivorian, I am tipping Yaya Toure. In Ivory Coast, they are all expecting Yaya Toure to win the award in order to get over the pains of losing to Nigeria at the Africa Cup of Nations,” Gaye told Goal.

“The award is all about individual brilliance and Yaya Toure has outshined Mikel in this aspect. Should Obi Mikel win, we will celebrate with him,” he said.

  • Well, I believe individual achievements should not be used as the 'only' yardstick to determine who gets the award. Football is a team sport, so 'team-playing' should be the most important criteria as regarding who wears the crown tonight. That said, we are about to celebrate African football, so I do hope that true 'Africanism' is upheld here tonight, and the merits should not be all about achievements for one's club alone. He who the cap fits; let him wear it!...Mikel

    • Lolade Adewuyi Your comment reminds me of the argument around the Ballo D'Or. Should Ribery win it because he played as part of a gifted Bayern squad or should it go to Ronaldo because he's had a phenomenal year full of individual accolades? The jury's still out.
      9:09 AM
  • Lest we forget, there's also the category for Africa-based Player of the Year where veteran Egyptian Mohamed Aboutreika is contesting against his compatriot Ahmed Fathy and Nigeria's Sunday Mba. Like many people, I think that Aboutreika will win it again. It should be a fitting send off for him as he retires from football.

  • To my Ivorian friend, yes i have agreed wt you but to some extent. yaya is till our best African footballer. but what happened what he is on national duty? Why not him transform the same form to improve our African football during the international football events? To me not because am a nigerian, i think Mikel should be awarded because he plays to improve our African game whenever he's on national duties. Hence last year was his best year and he did well for Africa during the Cup of Nations.

  • Three players have been shortlisted for the 2013 CAF African Player of the Year award - Didier Drogba, Yaya Toure and John Obi Mikel. As the ceremony is being hosted in Nigeria this year, many locals here are rooting for Mikel to win it. There's cause for optimism as the last time the awards were held in Nigeria, Emmanuel Adebayor won it. Remember, Adebayor's parents hailed from Nigeria. Maybe that's good omen for Mikel.
