Colin Udoh hopes Mikel will win it
-
Former
Nigeria national team media officer and football analyst Colin Udoh
chimes in on the long held belief that no African player has won the BBC
African Footballer of the Year and the CAF title in the same year. Yaya
Toure is the reigning BBC POTY.
“There is always a first for
everything. But the truth is that either Mikel or Yaya deserves to be
named as Africa’s best. They were superb in the year under review. As a
Nigerian I want Mikel Obi to be the winner,” Udoh told Goal.

Paul Put is disappointed that Jonathan Pitroipa was not listed in the top three
-
Ode to the Forgotten Ones:
Burkina
Faso coach Paul Put (who is up for Coach of the Year award) has spoken
of his disappointment at Jonathan Pitroipa's absence from the top three.
“I
am very disappointed that [Jonathan] Pitroipa couldn’t make the top
three despite his exploits at the AFCON. Anyway, I think his major
undoing was not playing for a top European side,” Put told Goal's Shina
Oludare.

Did
you know that in its 22 years of existence, the CAF African Player of
the Year award has been won by players from only nine African countries?
Ghana, Cote D'Ivoire, Mali, Cameroon, Senegal, Liberia, Nigeria, Togo
and Morocco (the only non-West African victory).

Ivoirian television analyst Mamadou Gaye has spoken to our correspondent Shina Oludare about his choice for the award. Hear him
“As
an Ivorian, I am tipping Yaya Toure. In Ivory Coast, they are all
expecting Yaya Toure to win the award in order to get over the pains of
losing to Nigeria at the Africa Cup of Nations,” Gaye told Goal.
“The
award is all about individual brilliance and Yaya Toure has outshined
Mikel in this aspect. Should Obi Mikel win, we will celebrate with him,”
he said.

Ivory Coast TV analyst Mamadou Gaye expects Yaya Toure to retain the award tonight

And
just to remind you, the comperes for tonight's gala are former Nigeria
international Sunday Oliseh and South African TV journalist Carol
Shabalala. It promises to be a great one.

Lest
we forget, there's also the category for Africa-based Player of the
Year where veteran Egyptian Mohamed Aboutreika is contesting against his
compatriot Ahmed Fathy and Nigeria's Sunday Mba. Like many people, I
think that Aboutreika will win it again. It should be a fitting send off
for him as he retires from football.

The
awards cocktail and 'green carpet' begins at 7pm (WAT). Afterwards, the
main ceremonies will begin about an hour or two afterwards.
-
25
players began the race for the award before they were cut down to 10
and eventually three players were left. Here's our article with the
original 25-man list:

Three
players have been shortlisted for the 2013 CAF African Player of the
Year award - Didier Drogba, Yaya Toure and John Obi Mikel. As the
ceremony is being hosted in Nigeria this year, many locals here are
rooting for Mikel to win it. There's cause for optimism as the last time
the awards were held in Nigeria, Emmanuel Adebayor won it. Remember,
Adebayor's parents hailed from Nigeria. Maybe that's good omen for
Mikel.
