Di Maria and Vidal would lift Manchester United, says Silvestre
Mikael Silvestre has backed Manchester United’s pursuit of Real Madrid winger Angel Di Maria and Juventus midfielder Arturo Vidal.

The Red Devils have been linked with Vidal throughout the summer, while Di Maria looked certain to move to Paris Saint-Germain before club president Nasser Al-Khelaifi revealed that he was “too expensive.”

Louis van Gaal referred to the winger, who was an unused substitute in Real Madrid's Uefa Super Cup victory over Sevilla on Tuesday, as a player “of the highest level” last week, and Silvestre thinks the Argentina international would relish a move to Old Trafford.

“Of course those two players are great," the Frenchman told Sportmasta. "They are top players and will lift United.

"United are a famous club and everybody wants to go there, including the top players like Angel Di Maria. I think they will be a good addition to the current squad."

Sportmasta understands United are pushing ahead with moves for defender Daley Blind and Fiorentina wide man Juan Cuadrado, and Silvestre believes Van Gaal needs to make quality signings this summer in order for the club to compete for the Premier League title again.

He added: “They [Vidal and Di Maria] had a very good World Cup and we know that both of them are quite capable so, they will do well at United.

"However, it’s not just a two-man team but the entire unit has to make that work. But yes, they need good signings. I don’t know if those two will join United but in case they do, they would be good."

After playing an important role in United’s title triumph in his first season, Robin van Persie's 2013-14 campaign under David Moyes was disrupted by injury but the Dutchman produced a fantastic showing at the World Cup under Van Gaal and Silvestre expects the 31-year-old to play an important role under his former Netherlands boss.

“Robin is far from finished," he said. "He still has lot to offer. You know the centre forward will shine only if the rest of the team is playing well. He will only shine with the team."
