Many believe the gap has been left for the French international once he completes his reported world-record move from Juventus.
New Manchester United striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic has claimed the number nine shirt for the forthcoming season – relegating previous incumbent Anthony Martial to number 11.
The former Sweden international becomes the third player to wear that number in the last three years with 20-year-old Martial taking over from loan flop Radamel Falcao when he joined last summer for an initial fee of £36million.
Frenchman Martial’s choice of number 11 mirrors his choice of shirt for the national team at Euro 2016.
Ibrahimovic becomes the seventh man to wear United’s number nine shirt in the Premier League era.
Memphis Depay has kept the number seven shirt despite claims he would leave the club this summer, while Jesse Lingard moves from 35 to 14 and young forward Marcus Rashford has been handed the 19 shirt.
The Red Devils have said that the numbers remain subject to change before they are officially submitted to the Premier League.
