The Liverpool Echo claims Jurgen Klopp will now intensify his search for a centre-back after recently cooling his search for more defensive cover.
The arrival of Joel Matip and the news that Mamadou Sakho was cleared of a doping offence by UEFA last week has meant that Klopp was looking to strengthen his midfield as a priority, but Sakho is facing around a month out with an Achilles problem. And now left-back Gomez, who Klopp had earmarked as cover at centre-back, has picked up a significant injury which the club are waiting to discover the full extent of.
Gomez, who was close to returning to full training after nine months out due to surgery on a ruptured cruciate ligament, has picked up an Achilles tendon injury and that leaves Liverpool in a quandary.
Klopp’s centre-back options have been severely depleted with Kolo Toure being released and Martin Skrtel completing a £5.5million move to Fenerbahce. It leaves Klopp with a major defensive headache because he has just two senior centre-backs in Joel Matip and Dejan Lovren.
The German coach is now looking to add an experienced centre-back to his shopping list which already includes a left-back and a central midfielder.
Borussia Dortmund defender Neven Subotic has been linked with Liverpool but Middlesbrough have agreed and £8million fee for the 27-year-old and they are hoping to tie up that deal in the next 24 hours.
