Polish swimmer Natalia Charlos had to be rescued from the water after losing consciousness in the women's 10k race at the
European Swimming Championships.
Charlos, who lives and trains in Germany, was pulled
ashore on the opening day in Berlin after officials and spectators
alerted the lifeguard.
The 21-year-old was treated at the scene and Germany team doctor Alexander Beck said Charlos was recovering well.
Charlos overexerted herself after picking the wrong lane at the finish.
The race was completed, with Sharon van Rouwendaal of the Netherlands winning gold, Eva Risztov of Hungary claiming the silver, and Italy's Aurora Ponsele taking bronze.
The 5k, 10k and 25k open water races will all be held at the same Regattastrecke Grunau venue.
