Glasgow Rocks edge Manchester Giants as play-off bid goes on

Gareth Murray: Shot Glasgow Rocks into the lead as they edged Manchester GiantsGlasgow Rocks strengthened their bid for a BBL Championship play-off place with an 85-80 victory over Manchester Giants at the Emirates Arena.
The Rocks ended a four-match losing streak as the ninth-placed Rocks took a season head-to-head on the tenth-placed Giants, with both pursuing a top eight finish.
Yorick Williams opened the scoring after eight seconds and the visitors led through the early stages, Gareth Murray's six points inspired a 10-3 burst from the Rocks that helped them out to a 28-22 lead by the end of the first.
The Giants got back to within one in the second as points from David Aliu and David Watts made the score 36-35, but the Rocks restored their margin with a dominant finish to the first half, scoring the last nine points in two minutes, with five for Fran Urli to lead 49-39.
Giants struggled to narrow that gap from there until late in the game, when Aliu scored four points in a row as they got the score back to 71-66 from the outset of the fourth period.
Urli and Daniel Northern thwarted the comeback, as the Rocks extended their lead to 80-69 with four minutes to play; yet they had to see out one more run, as the visitors scored seven in a row before EJ Harrison and Alex Marcotullio sealed victory in the final minute.
