Javier Tebas says the LFP will pay tribute to Lionel Messi even if the Barcelona star becomes La Liga's all-time record goalscorer at the home of great rivals Real Madrid.
The Argentina international is just two goals shy of Telmo Zarra's tally of 251, meaning the four-time Ballon d'Or winner could make history in this weekend's Primera Division clash with Eibar at Camp Nou.
However, there is also the intriguing possibility of Messi, who has scored more goals in Clasico history than any other player, breaking the record in the meeting with Madrid on October 25.
When asked if the LFP would be willing to publicly recognise the Blaugrana ace as the greatest goalscorer in the history of the Spanish league before a partisan crowd at the Santiago Bernabeu, Tebas replied: "Why not?
"I am thinking of ideas but the homage has to be a tribute that lasts forever.
"We must never forget it in La Liga, it should always stay with us.
"If the time comes and he beats the record we will have to reflect upon it because it will be an historic moment.”
Messi, who has netted 21 times against Madrid, has already racked up six goals in seven Liga appearances for Barca so far this season.
The Rosario native has spent his entire professional career in Catalunya, having joined Barca from Newell's Old Boys in 2000.
Messi made his Liga debut on October 16, 2004, in a 1-0 win over city rivals Espanyol. He scored his first goal the following May, against Albacete, and he has now struck 249 times in just 284 matches.
