Asmir Begovic says Chelsea’s performance in their 1-0 defeat at Stoke City proves the players are fighting for Jose Mourinho.
A Marko Arnautovic volley in the second half consigned Chelsea to a seventh defeat in just 12 Premier League games, but Begovic felt there were plenty of positives to take from his return to the Britannia Stadium.
“We definitely did enough to get a result here, but when things aren’t going your way you don’t get the luck you deserve,” the former Stoke goalkeeper told Sky Sports.
“We hit the post, we slipped over when we had open goals, we are making things hard for ourselves.
“We’re behind the manager. I think you can see from our performance we’re fighting for one another, fighting for everyone involved.”
Mourinho was able to speak to his players in the dressing room as he served a one-match stadium ban, but Begovic played down the significance of that, with the Portuguese giving his pre-match instructions in the hotel.Chelsea’s Premier League season by numbers:7 – The number of league games lost by Chelsea and Mourinho this season – the most league defeats the Portuguese has suffered in a single season in his career.16 – Chelsea’s position in the league.11 – The points won by Chelsea in the Premier League.23 – League goals conceded by Chelsea – the joint-third worst in the division.3 – Premier League games won by the champions out of 12.13 – Points between Chelsea and the Champions League places already.14 – Points between Chelsea and leaders Manchester City who have a game in hand.2 – Goals scored by Diego Costa in the Premier League – he scored 20 last season.0 – Premier League goals scored by reigning PFA Player of the Year Eden Hazard.
“His spirit and his presence are always there,” Begovic said. “He prepared us well. We wanted to get a result for him.”
“We think he’s the right man and he’s someone we respect and we work hard for. It’s unfortunate we’re not giving him the results our performances deserve.
“We just have to keep playing like we are. Eventually it has to turn. The wall will break down and we’ll be up and running.
“It’s not a simple thing, it’s not something you can pinpoint. It’s a collection of things and when things aren’t going your way, you get punished for little bits and pieces.”
