Mourinho must take responsibility say Redknapp
Jose Mourinho must take “a lot of responsibility” for Chelsea’s awful start to the new season, according to Jamie Redknapp.
Marko Arnautovic’s winner for Stoke City consigned Chelsea to a seventh defeat in 12 Premier League games on Saturday evening to leave the Blues down in 16th going into the latest international break.
According to Redknapp, several of Mourinho’s decisions have contributed to the champions’ slump.
“This time after 12 games last season they had not lost, now they’ve lost seven matches – something is dramatically wrong,” Redknapp told Sportmasta.
“It can’t be right. They breezed the league last year, to be in this situation is unprecedented, I can’t remember a team ever performing like this after winning the title.
“Mourinho has to take a lot of responsibility for that; the club doctor [situation], taking John Terry off at half-time against Man City, subbing Nemanja Matic on and off – he’s the best player you’ve got – Eden Hazard’s form, a stadium ban, how many more things can there be?”
Redknapp also believes Mourinho is doing himself few favours with his behaviour on the touchline – he served a one-game stadium ban against Stoke – and in front of the media, but he is unsure who Chelsea could replace him with.
“You almost feel he is dragging the club down with his behaviour and if it carries on I don’t know what you can do,” Redknapp added.
“The problem is who do you get? It’s not that easy. Because of his reputation maybe you should give him more time but this is more than worrying, this is terrible times for Chelsea.”
Frank Lampard, meanwhile, believes there were positives to take from his former club’s latest defeat.
“This is far from a blip, they are losing games regularly,” he said. “They need to turn the corner very quickly. They can’t dwell on it, they need to get out of it and put it to bed.
“I saw glimpses of what they need to turn the corner. I couldn’t fault their performance, they just didn’t get that little bit of luck to get the result.
“They need to get results, simple as that.”
Asked what Mourinho could do to turn things around, Lampard added: “He will get to work in the week, but there is only so much he can do in training and tactically.
“He has to be positive because there is so much being thrown at Chelsea, there are players out of form and low on confidence, you can see that.
“They need everything to be behind them in a positive way and look forward.”
