British number two Aljaz Bedene suffered a straight-sets defeat by
Uzbekistan's Denis Istomin in round one of the Kremlin Cup in Moscow.
World number 50 Bedene, 26, is ranked three places above Istomin but was broken to trail 4-2 in the first set.
Istomin sealed the set in 38 minutes and built on a 5-1 lead in the second to close out the match 6-3 6-3.
The 29-year-old won his first ATP Tour event in Nottingham in June and faces defending champion Marin Cilic next.
