The 2016 summer transfer window has already been notable for the world-record transfer of Paul Pogba from Juventus to Manchester United for whopping £89.25million. Just think you could have seven or eight Pogba’s or buy Liverpool Football club, according to estimates over the weekend.
Despite summer cumulative transfer spending rising in the last four years, there are no guarantees this time around that the current total of £791million will top last summer’s record £870million total.
Clubs went big and quickly, spending well over £100million more on new players in the first week of this year’s summer transfer window than they had at the same point last season, despite purchasing fewer players. But since then spending has slowed down and the likes of new boys Hull City are yet to spend a penny.

Premier League clubs broke the summer spending record last summer, up four per cent from the previous year with Manchester City the biggest spenders, splashing out £160m for new talent – a record for a single club. City have though topped that again this term with a new manager at the helm in Pep Guardiola, and they look set to add to their current £165million summer spend with the addition of a new goalkeeper before the 11pm deadline on Wednesday, August 31
Their quieter rivals from across the city, Manchester United, also have a new man in charge and Jose Mourinho has been flexing his muscle in the market with a spend of £157million to date. That figure could also rise with Mourinho looking at adding a defender to the star quartet he has already brought in at Old Trafford.
Sadio Mane has followed the well-trodden path from Southampton to Liverpool for a fee of £35million to help Liverpool to a spend of £65million, but they look in desperate need of a left-back to replace the ticking time-bomb that is Alberto Moreno. The Anfield club’s requirement is widely-known though, despite Jurgen Klopp’s attempts to convince us otherwise and his desire for the window to close, but they may have to spend big to add defensive reinforcements.
The champions Leicester City have been modest in their acquisitions with just £37million being forked out to swell their ranks. Ahmed Musa at £16.5million is their biggest signing of the summer and he has shown already that he looks a perfect fit alongside Jamie Vardy and co.

Arsenal spent in excess of £30million earlier in the summer of Granit Xhaka to see their spending at just over the £44million, but there’s almost certainly set to be one more new arrival before the deadline. Gunners’ fans are calling for more new signings, but Arsene Wenger has a firm grip on the purse strings at The Emirates and multiple signings are not likely.
Their London rivals and last season’s fallen champions, Chelsea, have forked out £63.5million with new gaffer Antonio Conte spending half of that on Belgium striker Michy Batshuayi. The Italian tactician could yet add to that with a new centre-back with Blues fans praying for big-money move for Giorgio Chiellini.
Everton, Sunderland and West Brom are looking for bodies in all positions, while West Ham need a striker or two and Tottenham want a winger.
All in all we could be primed for an exciting countdown to the deadline.
