Rooney can play where he wants for England, says Allardyce

Sam Allardyce watched England scrape a win in his first game in charge and then urged the media to relax over Wayne Rooney’s role.
Allardyce had vowed to use Rooney in a more advanced position than predecessor Roy Hodgson, but the Manchester United man was again deployed in a deep-lying midfield role in Slovakia.
That, though, shouldn’t be an issue for media focus, insists Allardyce, who says that Rooney has the freedom to play in whatever areas he feels he is needed.
“Today Wayne played wherever he wanted to,” admitted Allardyce. “He was brilliant and controlled midfield. I can’t stop Wayne playing there.”
England needed a 95th-minute winner from Adam Lallana to beat 10-man Slovakia, who had Martin Skrtel send off in the second half, but Allardyce believes his side got what their performance merited.
“It was pretty nerve-racking at the end because the 10 men scenario meant we must win. We got what we deserved in the end and won in the last minute.
“We have dominated the game and got a very important win.”
