The Liverpool midfielder was the Three Lions’ hero, grabbing a 95th-minute winner – his first for his country – against the stubborn Slovakians, who had seen skipper Martin Skrtel sent off in the second half.
“That goal has been a long time coming,” Lallana told ITV after the game.
“I put pressure on myself to score goals. We kept plugging away. As a unit we played brilliantly and they didn’t have any chances.
“Of course it’s a great start for Sam and the team. He made it clear he wanted a clean sheet. I thought we were very disciplined.”
Captain Wayne Rooney was a little lighter on the superlatives, but insisted the professionalism of the performance should not be overlooked.
“We didn’t panic, that was the main thing,” he said.
“We stuck to our plan and kept our shape. Adam scored the goal to get us off to an excellent start.”
