The MLS defender looks ahead to what’s going to be a
hotly contested 2016 Copa America, in which he relishes the opportunity
to face off against the two Barca stars
Speaking exclusively to Sportmasta as part of the New Balance Furon 2.0 and new Visaro colourway boot launch, Watson opened up about why Costa Rica have to qualify from their group:
“We have to qualify because I'd like to play against Messi and Suarez, that would be a lot of good experience for myself as a professional because, as always, you would like to improve yourself every day.”
Some players can really feel the pressure of representing their country at a major international tournament, but not Kendall Waston.
“Pressure? I don't think so. I think it's a pleasure, a pleasure for doing what you love, and representing your country. We know that a lot of people would have liked to be in our positions and we have a big responsibility so now everything is, like, joyful.”
“I don't feel pressure for not losing any games yet with the national team. I think it's a motivational moment for us to continue looking for the success.”
And that success is something that Waston is looking to build on in establishing Costa Rica as a recognisable footballing nation.
“I think that we have to continue building up that history that we made in the World Cup,” Waston reminisces fondly.
“It’s not an easy group that we have against USA, Paraguay and Colombia but it's nice to play against those type of countries because we know the type of players that they have and it's always nice to play against those types of players.”
