Rajiv Ouseph produced England's standout performance at the World
Championships on Monday with victory over 16th seed Chong Wei Feng.
The 27-year-old Londoner came from behind to defeat the Malaysian who had beaten him at the Commonwealth Games.
Ouseph triumphed 17-21 24-22 21-16, in 65 minutes, at Copenhagen's Ballerup Super Arena.
The win secures Ouseph, ranked 22 in the world, a second-round clash with India's 23rd-ranked K. Srikanth.
Elsewhere, Commonwealth Games gold medallists Chris and Gabby Adcock also fought from behind to win against Malaysian opposition - beating Tan Aik Quan and Lai Pei Jing in the mixed doubles second round.
Scotland pair Robert Blair and Imogen Bankier, bronze medallists in Glasgow, crashed out to Russia's Anatoliy Yartsev and Evgeniya Kosetskaya.
Blair and Bankier are ranked 12 in the world - 37 places above their victorious opponents.
