Wenger wants derby win as proof of title credentials
Arsene Wenger wants Arsenal to prove their title credentials by bouncing back from their 5-1 defeat at Bayern Munich by beating Tottenham.
Arsenal’s hopes of making the last 16 of the Champions League are hanging by a thread following their humbling at the Allianz Arena, but they are being kept off the top of the Premier League by goal difference alone.
Wenger believes Sunday afternoon’s north London derby at Emirates Stadium is the perfect game for his side on the back of their midweek disappointment.
“It is about how we respond. When we lost heavily to Inter Milan in 2003 (losing 3-0 at home) we responded well. This is what I want now.
“Great teams can withstand big disappointments. I believe this is a potential title-winning team and this is a chance to put things right.
“We have to be in the fight at Christmas. The desire is there. We need to show it in all our games.
“What is positive for us is, if you look at our fixtures until now, we have played all the big teams and the teams fighting at the top apart from Man City.
“When we were top two years ago we had only played the teams in the second half of the table. This time we are in a strong position and we have played many teams who are in the top half of the table.”
Wenger, who is unlikely to make too many changes from the Bayern game, has reiterated his belief that Arsenal can still qualify for the knockout stages.
“I like to be loyal. I think when you are a player and have played football, you know that they are not machines. Sometimes you have a day when you are not good. Overall, what you look at is the performances of the last 10 to 15 games.
“We can still have a bright future in the Champions League. I feel we are not out of the competition yet.
“Of all the teams I have seen Bayern would be the super favourite. We knew before the game that Bayern was a special game for us and that the Premier League is a competition where we are on a strong run up to now and we want to continue that. This weekend we have a good opportunity to put things right.”
Wenger: Spurs stadium will be Arsenal’s ‘biggest challenge’
Arsene Wenger believes Tottenham’s new stadium will eventually see them compete financially with Arsenal and provide the “biggest challenge” to the club.
The Gunners already have their own state-of-the-art facilities with the Emirates Stadium, and north London rivals Spurs are also set for a new 61,000-seater home in the coming years.
Tottenham will move just a stone’s throw from their current White Hart Lane ground and are planning to relocate for the start of the 2018/19 season.
Arsenal spent several years being hampered by tight purse-strings as they repaid their stadium costs but have been able to take advantage of increased revenue in the past couple of seasons – bringing in the likes of club-record signing Mesut Ozil, Chile forward Alexis Sanchez and goalkeeper Petr Cech.
Spurs may also require some time to start benefiting from a new home, which is proposed to be the biggest in London and will host NFL games over a 10-year period.
But, ahead of Sunday’s meeting between the two at the Emirates, Arsenal boss Wenger believes the move will see Tottenham match his side.
“It is the biggest challenge we face. It will be purely down to the technical quality of work,” Wenger said when asked about Spurs becoming more of a financial threat.
“On a financial level, we always had level power because when we had 37,000, 38,000 seats (at Highbury) we were level.
“After we moved into the new stadium we had less financial resources than them because we had to pay our debts back. That was always the case.
“Now, maybe in the last two or three years we are in a stronger financial situation but that will not last because they build a new stadium as well.”
On the pitch, Arsenal are keeping up the pace at the top of the table while Tottenham remain unbeaten in the league since the opening weekend of the campaign.
Wenger’s men go into the game on the back of a 5-1 Champions League hammering from Bayern Munich but certainly have the players to keep their Barclays Premier League title tilt alive with victory over their rivals.
Sanchez has enjoyed a strong start to the campaign while World Cup winner Ozil feels he is now able to show his best having made an uncertain start to life at Arsenal.
“Last season, I was out with my knee injury for a few months,” the Germany midfielder told arsenal.com
“This year I feel fit. I have no injuries and can perform well in games. At the moment, things are going really well.
“But you need to praise the whole team. We fight for each other and are like a small family. You can sense that on the pitch. It shows that we are hungry for success and that’s why I want to praise the whole team.”
Unlikely hero Gibbs saves Arsenal from derby despair
Substitute Kieran Gibbs’ goal 13 minutes from full-time earned Arsenal a draw against Tottenham in an absorbing North London derby.
Gibbs, who replaced Joel Campbell in the second half, met Mesut Ozil’s cross at the back post to bundle the ball home to the delight of the majority of the Emirates Stadium – a goal which gave Ozil a Premier League record for an assist in six-consecutive games.
England striker Harry Kane had given Spurs the lead on the half-hour mark, neatly tucking the ball past Petr Cech after being found by left-back Danny Rose.
The hosts created little in the first half, and were given a torrid time by the pressing and harrying of the Tottenham midfield, prompting Arsene Wenger to replace Santi Cazorla with Mathieu Flamini at halftime.
It looked like the Gunners were heading for defeat when Olivier Giroud wasted two free headers from six yards out in the second half, the first of which hit the bar with Hugo Lloris beaten, while the second glanced agonizingly wide, before Gibbs spared his side any blushes.
Athletic Bilbao 2-1 Espanyol: Williams and Garcia preserve unbeaten run
The Basque side bagged the full three points from
Sunday's La Liga encounter with to ensure they remain undefeated for a
seventh game in a row
Goals from Inaki Williams and Raul Garcia helped Athletic Bilbao to a 2-1 win over Espanyol at San Mames on Sunday. The Basque outfit deservedly went a goal up before the interval following a superb strike from Williams, but Hernan Perez levelled the scoring after the break.
Garcia restored Athletic's lead after 64 minutes of play and the visitors failed to get a second equaliser as it remained 2-1.
Athletic have collected 17 points from 11 games following Sunday's win, while Espanyol have gathered 13 points so far.

Athletic made a fine start to the game and grabbed the lead after just eight minutes following a wondergoal from Williams. Oscar de Marcos set up the 21-year-old with a chipped pass and he took it out of the air superbly before volleying home from inside the area for his fifth goal in his last three games.
Aritz Aduriz tried his luck his luck shortly after as the hosts pushed for a second goal, but the experienced striker failed to get his shot on target.
Espanyol levelled the scoring shortly after the interval following a fine team move. Victor Sanchez Mata eventually set up Perez and the Paraguay international beat Gorka Iraizoz to make it 1-1.
The hosts immediately started charging forward again in a bid to restore their lead and Garcia netted what would prove to be the winner shortly after the hour-mark.
Markel Susaeta set up the former Atletico Madrid man and he unleashed a powerful shot that proved to be too much for Espanyol goalkeeper Pau Lopez.
Casilla hoping to extend unbeaten run
Los Blancos are yet to suffer defeat in 2015-16 and
the Spanish goalkeeper wants the run to continue as they challenge on
multiple fronts
Rafael Benitez is yet to taste defeat in the 14 matches in all competitions he has presided over since taking the helm.
But despite their great start to the campaign, Madrid only sit top of the table on goal difference with Barcelona – who suffered defeat a 2-1 loss at Sevilla in October - matching their 24 points.
Casilla knows that trips to the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan are frequently tough, but is keen for his side to maintain their current form on all fronts.
"The next game against Sevilla will be really difficult, but we know that we must give everything to maintain this run of results," the goalkeeper said.
"Real Madrid is the best side in the world. We know that we always have to win and that motivates us to be at our top level.
"Our aim is to compete for everything. We are on the right path and everyone in the dressing room wants the run to continue."
The 29-year-old has made just one league appearance so far this season – coming in the 3-1 defeat to Las Palmas – but could be in line to start once more with Keylor Navas struggling with a groin injury aggravated against Paris Saint-Germain in midweek.
Marcelo (thigh) and Karim Benzema are also doubts, with the striker charged with complicity in an attempt to blackmail and participating in a criminal conspiracy as part of an investigation into an alleged sex-tape plot involving France team-mate Mathieu Valbuena this week.
However, the returns of Gareth Bale and Dani Carvajal to training on Thursday will provide Benitez with a boost, while Pepe could make his first appearance since September.
Sevilla boss Unai Emery was pleased to have Ever Banega available for the 3-1 Champions League defeat to Manchester City following an ankle injury.
While he insists his team are not reliant on the Argentina midfielder, he wants other members of his squad to step up when called upon and provide strength in depth.
"We won at Barcelona without Banega, although it was said that the team didn't know how to win without him," Emery said.
"Banega gives a different touch, but, for example, [Michael] Krohn-Dehli is a great player who perhaps hasn't given his best level for Sevilla.
"We must unite to have two players per position – we cannot depend on one player."
Sevilla – who recently tied Grzegorz Krychowiak to a new contract that will run until 2019 – were beaten 3-2 by Real Madrid in this fixture last season.
Cristiano Ronaldo scored his fifth hat-trick against the Andalusian side in that game, taking his Liga tally against them to 19 – more than he has scored against any other top-flight club.

Barcelona 3-0 Villarreal: Neymar hits second-half double
The Brazilian scored twice after half-time -
including a spectacular third - and Luis Suarez was also on the score
sheet as Luis Enrique's side recorded a comfortable home win
Neymar and Luis Suarez made light of Lionel Messi's absence once again by inspiring Barcelona to a 3-0 win over Villarreal with three second-half goals.Usually the supporting cast to the Argentine in the Barca front three, Neymar and Suarez have been in irresistible form since Messi picked up a knee injury last month.
And the deadly duo were at it again at Camp Nou on Sunday, scoring once each before Neymar grabbed a spectacular third to move Luis Enrique's side at least temporarily three points clear of Real Madrid.
Their title rivals face Sevilla away from home on Sunday evening.
Only Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid had conceded fewer league goals this season than Villarreal prior to kick-off, and Marcelino's men showed plenty of gritty defensive organisation in the first half to keep Barca at bay.
But, somewhat inevitably, Neymar and Suarez came to the fore after the break, with the former breaking the deadlock after an hour with an unerring finish before the latter made sure of the points from the penalty spot nine minutes later.
Neymar then capped off the convincing win with a brilliant flick and volley from a Suarez pass.
After a quiet start, Barca gradually wrested control away from a confident Villarreal and Dani Alves saw a well-struck volley deflected wide for a corner in the 18th minute as the pressure on the visitors' goal began to mount.
Jeremy Mathieu was next to go close when a lightning counter from Barca ended with Suarez slipping a pass into the path of the marauding French defender, only for his powerful low shot to be well saved from Alphonse Areola.
But for all their territorial dominance, Luis Enrique's team had Claudio Bravo to thank for keeping them level at half-time when the Chilean made a superb save from Samu Castillejo's close-range effort just before the break.
Both Suarez and Neymar were cautioned for dissent shortly after the restart as Barca's frustrations grew, before Alves forced Areola into action once again from Neymar's pinpoint cross.
The hosts finally took the lead on the hour mark and it was Neymar who made the breakthrough.

Sergio Busquets intercepted a wayward pass around 40 yards from goal before feeding the Brazilian, who took one touch before coolly slotting his 10th league goal of the season beyond Areola at the goalkeeper's near post.
Suarez got in on the act soon after. Munir El Haddadi was crudely brought down in the area by Jaume Costa and Neymar unselfishly opted to hand penalty duties to his team-mate, who sent Areola the wrong way for his sixth goal in his last four appearances.
But Neymar saved the best for last. Suarez played a low ball in from the left, and the Brazil captain produced an audacious flick over the head of a hapless Villarreal defender before spinning and volleying past Areola.
The emphatic victory will see Barca go into the eagerly anticipated Clasico against Madrid on November 21 full of confidence.
Man Utd & Liverpool eye Danish wonderkid
GERRARD COULD YET PLAY FOR LIVERPOOL AGAIN
Jurgen Klopp will reassess Steven Gerrard’s playing situation if he makes an impression in training, according to The Independent.
The newspaper was the first to reveal on Wednesday that Gerrard would be returning to Liverpool, but Klopp stressed later in the day that he had not discussed the possibility of the 35-year-old turning out in Red again.
The Independent insists it could happen if all parties are happy, but ‘Gerrard is more likely to feature in the club’s off-field long-term strategy’, the newspaper adds.
CHELSEA STARLET ATTRACTING BIG-MONEY INTEREST
Chelsea could sell an Academy star for in excess of £10million, claims the Daily Mirror.Charly Musonda, a Belgium Under-21 midfielder, is regarded as one of the Blues’ best young prospects but does not appear close to breaking into Jose Mourinho’s first-team plans.
With that in mind, Monaco are ready to try again for the 19-year-old in January having apparently had a £10million bid rejected by Chelsea in the summer. If the west London club refuse to sell Musonda, who has also been linked with Arsenal, Monaco will ask to take him on loan for the rest of the season.
UNITED AND LIVERPOOL TRACK TEEN STAR
Manchester United and Liverpool are ready to go head-to-head for Danish wonderkid Emre Mor, claims the Daily Mail. The 18-year-old’s performances for FC Nordsjaelland Under-19s have earned ‘rave reviews’ from scouts across Europe, according to the newspaper, with the two Premier League clubs among the clubs considering approaches.
However, Borussia Dortmund are said to be ‘long-term admirers’ of the forward, while Ajax are also keen.

Arsenal and Liverpool in Jese chase
BIG GUNS CHASE ‘NEW ASHLEY COLE’
Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester City and Tottenham are all said to be tracking Walsall left-back Rico Henry.
The Mirror reports that the four Premier League giants have all watched the 18-year-old, who has been likened to Ashley Cole by Walsall boss Dean Smith.
Henry has been in superb form for the Saddlers, having scored twice this season, and his form has been rewarded with a new contract recently until 2018.
The academy product can also be utilised as a left wing-back and left midfielder.
BIG JESE INTEREST
Liverpool and Arsenal face competition if they wish to sign Real Madrid forward Jese, with Napoli also in the hunt.
According to claims repeated by Talksport, the promising 22-year-old is in hight demand, with Inter Milan also linked with the striker earlier this week.
Jese has found playing time hard to come by at the Bernabeu, but Rafa Benitez said recently that he was not willing to discuss a move for the starlet.
The Reds and the Gunners have been credited with a long-term interest, but they will certainly face competition from continent.
FOXES FANCY KAROL AFTER CHRISTMAS
Leicester are said to be eyeing a move for Poland midfielder Karol Linetty, who has also been watched by Manchester City.
The Mirror claims the Lech Poznan star, who has helped his country reach Euro 2016, will be the subject of a move from Claudio Raneiri when the winter transfer window opens.
City are said to have watched Linetty when his side faced Belenenses in the Europa League earlier this season.

Chelsea eye Chicharito; trio watch Gaitan
Chelsea are plotting a move for Javier Hernandez, Inter Milan want Branislav Ivanovic, while Manchester City, Manchester United and Arsenal have watched Nicolas Gaitan, according to Sunday’s newspapers.
CHELSEA PLAN CHICHARITO BID
Chelsea are plotting a shock move for Manchester United reject Javier Hernandez in January, claims the Sunday People. The Blues have scored only 16 goals in 12 Premier League games this season, with Diego Costa managing only two in seven appearances, and Loic Remy and Radamel Falcao only one between them.
Hernandez spent last season on loan at Real Madrid before United sold him to Bayer Leverkusen in the summer. The 27-year-old has scored 12 goals in 19 games for club and country this season, including eight in his last six.
It seems unlikely, therefore, that Leverkusen would be willing to sell the Mexico striker, but The People claim he would cost around £8.5million if they do.
INTER MAKE IVANOVIC INTEREST KNOWN
Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic is wanted by Inter Milan boss Roberto Mancini, according to the Sunday Mirror. The 31-year-old is out of contract at Stamford Bridge in the summer and has been one of the players that has struggled most during Chelsea’s atrocious start to their Premier League title defence.
Ivanovic would like to stay on, with his family settled in London, but Chelsea’s policy is that contract extensions with players over the age of 30 will not be discussed until the February of the final year of their deal.
That may give the Serb a decision to make in January, when he will be free to speak to clubs from overseas.
The Mirror says Roberto Mancini’s interest in Ivanovic has been relayed and that the Serie A club are hopeful a deal can be struck.
MAN CITY, MAN UTD AND ARSENAL WATCH GAITAN
It is a rumour we have heard a thousand times, but the Sunday People claims Manchester City are ‘closing in’ on Benfica midfelder Nicolas Gaitan.Their definition of ‘closing in’ is that City, apparently along with Manchester United and Arsenal, had representatives watch Gaitan in action during Benfica’s win over Galatasaray in the Champions League on Tuesday.
Atletico Madrid are ‘among a host of other top clubs who have been following the 27-year-old’, the newspaper adds, but City are said to be the favourites to sign the Argentina international.

Tuchel's men hold on to take the points
Goals from Kagawa, Ginter and Aubameyang allowed BVB
to keep up the chase on runaway leaders Bayern at the top, while two
strikes from Huntelaar kept their rivals in the game
Borussia Dortmund remain hot on the heels of Bundesliga leaders Bayern
Munich after a thrilling 3-2 victory over Schalke in the 147th
Revierderby. Shinji Kagawa, Matthias Ginter and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang all found the net for the hosts in Sunday's clash at Signal Iduna Park, with both of Schalke's goals coming from Klaas-Jan Huntelaar.
Although Schalke did manage to hit back quickly after Kagawa gave Dortmund a 30th-minute lead, they were undone again by Ginter just before the break and looked to be staring down the barrel when Aubameyang's 14th league goal of the season made it 3-1 early in the second half.
Huntelaar's 71st-minute reply made for a tense final quarter, but ultimately it was to be second-placed Dortmund's day as Thomas Tuchel's men hauled themselves to within five points of Bayern with a seventh consecutive win in all competitions.
The result extended Dortmund's fine Bundesliga start to nine wins from the opening 12 games and was all the more impressive bearing in mind they were denied the services of injured star Marco Reus. The opening exchanges were predictably frenetic and bruising, with Schalke duo Max Meyer and Huntelaar very fortunate to escape without punishment after hurling themselves into rash challenges within the first five minutes.
Despite the scrappy start, however, the capacity crowd never let the volume level drop and were rewarded as the game burst into life after 20 minutes.
Schalke goalkeeper Ralf Fahrmann was almost caught out by Aubameyang after taking a heavy touch in trying to control a back-pass, while at the other end, Dennis Aogo picked out Leroy Sane with a fine cross from the left, but the teenage midfielder fired wide from close range.
Having survived that scare, the hosts began to apply some sustained pressure and found a way through on the half-hour mark.
Ginter delivered a superb right-footed cross and, despite the close attentions of three taller defenders, Kagawa rose highest to power a downward header past Fahrmann.
The home fans had barely stopped celebrating, however, when Schalke equalised three minutes later.
Mats Hummels gave the ball away cheaply on the halfway line, Leon Goretzka sent Sane racing away down the right and he squared for the onrushing Huntelaar to find the net.
Undaunted, Dortmund swiftly got back on the front foot and deservedly restored their lead three minutes before the break.
Having supplied the assist for his side's first goal, Ginter scored the second himself, out-jumping Sead Kolasinac at the near post to nod home Henrikh Mkhitaryan's corner.
Seven minutes into the second half, Tuchel's men increased their lead, Gonzalo Castro finding Aubameyang at the end of an incisive breakaway and the in-form striker calmly slotting home his 22nd goal of the season in all competitions.
Moments later it could and should have been 4-1, this time Aubameyang turning provider as he squared for the unmarked Mkhitaryan, who was foiled by Fahrmann with the goal at his mercy.
The overworked Schalke goalkeeper was then called into spectacular action again after 69 minutes, this time to keep out a powerful header from Sokratis Papastathopoulos, who had rumbled forward to meet a Mkhitaryan corner.
The Greek defender was less impressive in his own box moments later, however, failing to deal with a regulation cross and allowing Huntelaar to net his second goal of the game and set up a tense finale.
But despite their best efforts, Andre Breitenreiter's men could not manage to find the equaliser.
Patience is the key for Manchester United
Louis van Gaal has praised Manchester United’s patience after second-half goals from Jesse Lingard and Juan Mata saw off visitors West Brom.
United have been the subject of a lot of criticism due to a lack of attacking threat in recent weeks, and it looked to be a familiar story against the Baggies, until youngster Lingard showed composure beyond his 22 years to calmly side-foot the ball into the bottom corner from the edge of the area.
Juan Mata completed the 2-0 victory with an extra-time penalty, after Gareth McAuley had been sent off for hauling down Anthony Martial when the forward was clean through.
“Everybody knows who has played football that the most difficult way to score is against a very defensive team. The space is only at the wings and we have tried to do that,” Van Gaal said.
“The only way you can play against such a defensive, organised team is the way we do it, you need patience. In the second half West Brom are more tired and the chances come. The goal changed the game, we had more space. Then you can see the qualities of Anthony Martial, and we score the second goal out of his actions.”
Goalscorer Mata echoed the sentiments of his manager and insisted it is not possible to be gung-ho in every match.
“I think we played good football in the first half – in the second half we had problems. But it’s the perfect result going into the international break,” the Spaniard said.
“We knew they would come and defend and then look for Salomon Rondon on the counter. We were patient enough. Obviously we want to attack – sometimes you can’t because of the opponent.”
Rooney withdrawal and Mata goal generate biggest United reaction
With Louis van Gaal’s tactics coming in for criticism from the Manchester United faithful, we look at how the crowd reacted during Saturday’s 2-0 win over West Brom.
United manager Van Gaal saw his tactics and substitutions barracked by the crowd during Tuesday’s Champions League win over CSKA Moscow and addressed the thorny issue ahead of the visit of West Brom.
Here, SPORTMASTA tracks the reaction of Red Devils fans during the 2-0 win over Albion.
Pre-match: A relaxed-looked Van Gaal shakes hands with a fan as he makes his way to the dugout
9 minutes: The Old Trafford faithful show it is not only attacking football that gets their juices flowing, raising the roof for a brilliantly timed Chris Smalling tackle on Salomon Rondon.
15m: An opening for Wayne Rooney ups the decibel levels but Juan Mata bends a shot way after being played in by the England captain.
20m: The first boos of the afternoon, but they are reserved for James McClean, taking the field without a poppy on his shirt once again.
24m: Calls for Rooney to shoot when he picks up possession 25 yards out and minor deflation when he turns to shield before giving a short square pass.
38m: With the game still locked at 0-0 a small section of the Stretford End unveils the first “attack, attack, attack” chant of the day.
45m: Gentle applause – with no notable dissent – greets the half-time whistle despite a lack of goals. Van Gaal signs a young fan’s shirt as he heads inside.
52m: Jesse Lingard curls a wonderful opener past Boaz Myhill, roared in by the home fans, who come to life in the subsequent minutes.
62m: In stark contrast to the midweek clash against CSKA Moscow, Old Trafford cheers a defensive change – Phil Jones replacing the more attacking Ashley Young at right-back.
77m: With the volume turned down again, the away end pipes up to criticise the United support in song.
81m: Rooney exits the field to universal acclaim from the stands – and one of the loudest cheers of the day at Old Trafford.
91m: The biggest cheer of the day comes as Juan Mata’s injury-time penalty hits the back of the net to seal the points. A content crowd greet the final whistle.
Van Gaal reveals rejected loan bids for Lingard
Louis van Gaal always expected Jesse Lingard to become part of Manchester United’s first team this season after rejecting loan approaches for the winger.
Lingard scored a fine opening goal to set United on their way to a 2-0 win over West Brom at Old Trafford, following on from his assist for Wayne Rooney in the midweek Champions League win over CSKA Moscow.
Lingard has previously had spells on loan at Leicester, Birmingham, Brighton and Derby, but Van Gaal always planned to keep him at Old Trafford for this season.
“I put him in for my first game last year against Swansea because he had impressed me already, but then he had a very heavy injury and had to rehabilitate,” Van Gaal said.
“I told him I wanted to keep him and he had to wait for his moment because we have other players for that position.
“I have said no to other clubs who wanted to take him on loan and since he has come into the team he has played very well.”
Van Gaal also revealed that he had given Lingard some words of advice about his finishing ahead of the West Brom game.
“It was a fantastic goal Lingard scored,” Van Gaal said. “He had the same kind of chances a couple of days ago in training and he shot the ball first time, too straight.
“I said to him ‘you have to feel the ball first’ because with that touch you have more feeling with the ball.
“He did it and scored a fantastic goal so I am very happy for him. He played very well and deserves it and I am a happy manager.
“He has shown what an intelligent player he is, a good reader of the game and someone always looking for opportunities going forward. So today I am a very happy manager.”
One United player that is out on loan, Adnan Januzaj, could be recalled from Borussia Dortmund in January, according to the Sunday Mirror.
Mata backs Manchester United title charge
Juan Mata insists Manchester United are well positioned for a title challenge after coming through a “difficult month” in October.
United headed into the last international break on the back of a damaging 3-0 defeat to Arsenal, but since then they have gone on a four-match unbeaten Barclays Premier League run.
The latest result in that sequence came on Saturday when Louis van Gaal’s team defeated 10-man West Brom 2-0 thanks to a late penalty from Mata and Jesse Lingard’s first goal for the club.
Despite occasional dissenting voices being heard in the crowd at Old Trafford over the last week, United are fourth in the table and one win away from qualifying for the Champions League knockout stages.
Mata is not getting ahead of himself but admits United will be in a good position to challenge for top spot if their current form continues.
“Let’s see about that one, as there are still too many games until the end of the season,” Mata told MUTV when asked about United’s title chances.
“We have to take it game by game.
“It was a difficult month for us with some tough games, but I think we are still in the position to do it.
“Now we have to focus on the national team and then we have a lot of games in late November and December and we have to be at our best level.”
Mata scored United’s second in injury time after Gareth McAuley was dismissed for bringing down Anthony Martial in the box.
But it was Lingard who was the architect of United’s seventh win of the campaign.
The 22-year-old United academy graduate curled a peach of a shot into the far corner after Chris Brunt’s headed clearance landed straight at his feet.
“Jesse was remarkable because in a training session this week he had two chances like this and he shot at once and I said to him, ‘you have to control then you have more feeling for the ball’, and he did it today. It was a fantastic goal,” Van Gaal said.
Lingard suffered a serious knee injury on his United debut in Van Gaal’s first match in charge against Swansea.
The Warrington-born winger then went on loan to Derby before being given another chance by Van Gaal after impressing on United’s pre-season tour.
“He has started three games this season so he is doing well,” Van Gaal added.
“I give everyone a chance, always. When you are in my squad I shall always give a chance when the time is there and the time is there for him and that is why we have given him the chance and he has grabbed it with both hands.”
It could have been a much different story had Saido Berahino not wasted a free header from six yards out just after United had taken the lead.
“If there’s a guy you want it to drop to then it’s Saido. He seems to duck his head and he should have let it hit his forehead,” Albion manager Tony Pulis said.
Pulis accepted Mike Dean had to send McAuley off for fouling Martial as he was the last man.
“I can have no complaints with [the penalty and sending-off] according to the letter of the law,” he said.
Hughes grateful for hard work and Remy’s honesty
Mark Hughes hailed the work Stoke City put in to beat Chelsea but admitted they were fortunate to come up against an honest player in Loic Remy.
Eleven days on from beating the Blues on penalties at the Britannia Stadium in the Capital One Cup, Hughes’ side added to the London outfit’s woes on Saturday with a 1-0 triumph over them at the same ground in the Premier League.
Marko Arnautovic volleyed home in the 53rd minute to condemn Chelsea, whose manager Jose Mourinho was absent from the ground due to his one-match stadium ban, to a third league defeat in a row, and seventh of the campaign.
Hughes said after the game: “(That was a) good day in the office.
“We played really well and knew we would have to. Obviously at the moment they are not getting positive results but we had to work exceptionally hard against them in the cup and we knew we’d have to again.
“We did, and as a consequence we got the three points, which was massive for us.
“You know at some point they will ask questions of you – they have fantastic individual talent within a great team.
“So you have to stick at it, and we have been able to go up the other end and score a great goal ourselves.
“We showed great qualities once again and there were big performances by everybody – I am delighted.”
Chelsea had plenty of possession over the course of the contest and went close to levelling when Pedro struck the post.
There was also a scare for Stoke late on when Blues substitute Loic Remy hurdled a challenge from goalkeeper Jack Butland and stumbled as he tried to shoot, with the effort missing the target and referee Anthony Taylor awarding no penalty.
Hughes – whose side are up to 12th in the table – said of that incident: “Credit to Remy at the end.
“He could have looked for a penalty and time and time again you see Premier League players flailing legs behind them just to get contact.
“He didn’t do that – he hurdled Jack and credit to him, he was looking to score a goal, as all strikers should.
“He could have been a little bit more cynical and looked for the penalty, and who knows – at that stage it probably would have been given.”
Hughes admitted it had been strange not to have his opposite number Mourinho alongside him on the touchline and felt sure Chelsea would have missed the presence of their manager.
“I haven’t experienced it before where the opposition manager is not standing in the technical area next to me,” Hughes said.
“In terms of the influence you can have on your team, most of the work is done beforehand.
“But obviously half-time is a key time of the match and sometimes you can affect things in the correct manner.
“It is dependant on the manager. And with a manager the quality of Jose, I would suggest yes, they would have missed him to be perfectly honest – to give him credit for his standing in the game.”
Stoke and Chelsea resolve Costa complaint
Moments after the Blues’ 1-0 loss at the Britannia, a member of Stoke’s security staff reported Costa to the match referee after an incident on the touchline.
TV footage of the alleged incident showed Chelsea striker Costa going to retrieve the ball for a throw-in and then appearing to make contact with the steward with his foot.
A Chelsea spokesperson simply said: “Utter nonsense”. It is understood that the issue was then dealt with amicably and put to bed.
Referee Anthony Taylor will now make mention of the matter in his match report, but further action would appear highly unlikely.
The incident nonetheless provided yet another negative headline for the beleaguered champions after their dismal season took in a new low.
The Blues, without their under-pressure manager Jose Mourinho due to a stadium ban, were beaten for a seventh time in 12 Barclays Premier League games as they went down 1-0.
Chelsea did actually perform creditably, but luck was not on their side and Marko Arnautovic scored the only goal after 53 minutes.
In Mourinho’s absence, Chelsea did not send a representative to speak at the post-match press conference. It is the second time in three games that no member of the coaching staff has spoken to written media after Mourinho shunned duties after the loss at West Ham a fortnight ago.
It was other events at Upton Park that day that led to Mourinho’s non-appearance for the game at the Britannia Stadium. The Portuguese was handed a one-match stadium ban for abusive language towards match officials.
And despite suggestions Mourinho may try to circumvent the ban – reviving claims that he hid in a laundry basket when suspended in 2005 – there was no sign of him at the stadium. Club officials said he had remained at the team hotel.
From bad to worse – a timeline of Chelsea’s struggles
Jose Mourinho is currently enduring by far the worst season of his prestigious career after Chelsea suffered a ninth defeat in all competitions on Saturday.
The Blues have lost nine times in just 19 matches in all competitions this season – and fell to their latest defeat on Saturday as his beleaguered side lost 1-0 at Stoke.
Here, TEAMtalk looks at the Portuguese’s beleaguered start to the season, on and off the pitch.
August 8: Mourinho criticises Chelsea first-team doctor Carneiro and physiotherapist Jon Fearn for naivety in running on to the field to treat Eden Hazard in the opening-day draw with Swansea. Mourinho is cleared by the Football Association of abusing Carneiro, who then subsequently leaves Chelsea.
August 16: Chelsea lose 3-0 away to Manchester City, with Mourinho substituting captain John Terry at half-time.
August 29: Mourinho’s 100th Premier League home match results in only a second loss as his side go down 2-1 to Crystal Palace.
September 12: The Blues lose again as they are beaten 3-1 at Everton, Steven Naismith with a hat-trick.
September 19: Diego Costa is banned retrospectively for a running feud with Arsenal defenders Laurent Koscielny and Gabriel in Chelsea’s 2-0 win. Arsene Wenger avoids censure afterwards for calling referee Mike Dean “weak and naive”. Mourinho turns his frustrations to Wenger and the FA.
September 29: Chelsea lose 2-1 to Mourinho’s old club Porto in the Champions League.
October 3: Following a fourth league defeat, 3-1 to Southampton, Mourinho questions whether he will be sacked and subsequently receives the first vote of confidence in a manager in the 12 years of Roman Abramovich’s ownership. He is, though, hit with a £50,000 fine and suspended one-match stadium ban for comments after the loss about referee Robert Madley, which, an independent panel judges, alleged bias.
October 15: The Portuguese maintains his attack on the FA, calls his fine a “disgrace” and says: “I’m happy that I don’t have an electronic tag.”
October 17: Mourinho rounds on star player Hazard after dropping him to the bench for the 2-0 win over Aston Villa and demands the Belgian improve his defensive work rate.
October 24: Chelsea lose again, 2-1 at West Ham, losing Nemanja Matic to a first-half red card and also having assistant first-team coach Silvino Louro sent to the stands. Mourinho does not emerge on the touchline for the second half, having also been sent off.
October 26: Mourinho charged with misconduct over his behaviour at West Ham.
October 27: Holders Chelsea are knocked out of the Capital One Cup after losing their fourth-round tie to Stoke on penalties.
October 31: Chelsea suffer yet another defeat as Liverpool are 3-1 winners at Stamford Bridge. The club’s position on his future, publicly at least, is unchanged from the vote of confidence at the start of the month.
November 2: Press Association Sport learn legal papers will be served on Mourinho as part of separate but connected claims against him and against the club by Carneiro.
November 2: Mourinho is given a one-match stadium suspension with immediate effect and fined £40,000 after admitting an FA charge of misconduct over his behaviour at West Ham.
November 6: The FA releases its written reasons for Mourinho’s ban, saying he called referee Jon Moss “f****** weak”.
November 7: With Mourinho absent from the game due to his ban, Chelsea lose 1-0 at Stoke, the club’s seventh league loss of the campaign.
Performance proved we’re fighting for Jose. says Begovic
Asmir Begovic says Chelsea’s performance in their 1-0 defeat at Stoke City proves the players are fighting for Jose Mourinho.
A Marko Arnautovic volley in the second half consigned Chelsea to a seventh defeat in just 12 Premier League games, but Begovic felt there were plenty of positives to take from his return to the Britannia Stadium.
“We definitely did enough to get a result here, but when things aren’t going your way you don’t get the luck you deserve,” the former Stoke goalkeeper told Sky Sports.
“We hit the post, we slipped over when we had open goals, we are making things hard for ourselves.
“We’re behind the manager. I think you can see from our performance we’re fighting for one another, fighting for everyone involved.”
Mourinho was able to speak to his players in the dressing room as he served a one-match stadium ban, but Begovic played down the significance of that, with the Portuguese giving his pre-match instructions in the hotel.Chelsea’s Premier League season by numbers:7 – The number of league games lost by Chelsea and Mourinho this season – the most league defeats the Portuguese has suffered in a single season in his career.16 – Chelsea’s position in the league.11 – The points won by Chelsea in the Premier League.23 – League goals conceded by Chelsea – the joint-third worst in the division.3 – Premier League games won by the champions out of 12.13 – Points between Chelsea and the Champions League places already.14 – Points between Chelsea and leaders Manchester City who have a game in hand.2 – Goals scored by Diego Costa in the Premier League – he scored 20 last season.0 – Premier League goals scored by reigning PFA Player of the Year Eden Hazard.
“His spirit and his presence are always there,” Begovic said. “He prepared us well. We wanted to get a result for him.”
“We think he’s the right man and he’s someone we respect and we work hard for. It’s unfortunate we’re not giving him the results our performances deserve.
“We just have to keep playing like we are. Eventually it has to turn. The wall will break down and we’ll be up and running.
“It’s not a simple thing, it’s not something you can pinpoint. It’s a collection of things and when things aren’t going your way, you get punished for little bits and pieces.”
Rodgers, Di Matteo and Hiddink on Chelsea shortlist
Chelsea are likely to appoint Brendan Rodgers, Roberto Di Matteo or Guus Hiddink as interim manager if they sack Jose Mourinho, according to reports.
Chelsea lost for the seventh time in 12 Premier League games on Saturday at Stoke City and are 16th going into a two-week international break.
The Blues’ latest defeat has increased speculation that Roman Abramovich will feel no choice but to sack Mourinho now and appoint a manager until the end of the season when the likes of Pep Guardiola may be available.
According to both the Sunday People and Sunday Express, Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone could also be a contender for the permanent job at Stamford Bridge
The Argentine is apparently ready to quit his post at the Vicente Calderon Stadium in the summer and has already been ‘sounded out’ about the possibility of taking over at Chelsea, according to the Express.
Before then, there is said to be a shortlist of only three names – Rodgers, Di Matteo and Hiddink – to replace Mourinho, with Carlo Ancelotti apparently not willing to take over on a short-term basis.
Rodgers was only sacked by Liverpool last month and may want a longer break before returning to management, while it is unclear whether Di Matteo would want to return to a club that sacked him despite winning the Champions League.
Hiddink, however, has already enjoyed one spell as interim manager in Chelsea, in 2009 when he led the club to the FA Cup.
Mourinho must take responsibility say Redknapp
Jose Mourinho must take “a lot of responsibility” for Chelsea’s awful start to the new season, according to Jamie Redknapp.
Marko Arnautovic’s winner for Stoke City consigned Chelsea to a seventh defeat in 12 Premier League games on Saturday evening to leave the Blues down in 16th going into the latest international break.
According to Redknapp, several of Mourinho’s decisions have contributed to the champions’ slump.
“This time after 12 games last season they had not lost, now they’ve lost seven matches – something is dramatically wrong,” Redknapp told Sportmasta.
“It can’t be right. They breezed the league last year, to be in this situation is unprecedented, I can’t remember a team ever performing like this after winning the title.
“Mourinho has to take a lot of responsibility for that; the club doctor [situation], taking John Terry off at half-time against Man City, subbing Nemanja Matic on and off – he’s the best player you’ve got – Eden Hazard’s form, a stadium ban, how many more things can there be?”
Redknapp also believes Mourinho is doing himself few favours with his behaviour on the touchline – he served a one-game stadium ban against Stoke – and in front of the media, but he is unsure who Chelsea could replace him with.
“You almost feel he is dragging the club down with his behaviour and if it carries on I don’t know what you can do,” Redknapp added.
“The problem is who do you get? It’s not that easy. Because of his reputation maybe you should give him more time but this is more than worrying, this is terrible times for Chelsea.”
Frank Lampard, meanwhile, believes there were positives to take from his former club’s latest defeat.
“This is far from a blip, they are losing games regularly,” he said. “They need to turn the corner very quickly. They can’t dwell on it, they need to get out of it and put it to bed.
“I saw glimpses of what they need to turn the corner. I couldn’t fault their performance, they just didn’t get that little bit of luck to get the result.
“They need to get results, simple as that.”
Asked what Mourinho could do to turn things around, Lampard added: “He will get to work in the week, but there is only so much he can do in training and tactically.
“He has to be positive because there is so much being thrown at Chelsea, there are players out of form and low on confidence, you can see that.
“They need everything to be behind them in a positive way and look forward.”
I’m experienced enough to know what Villa need
Remi Garde has dismissed suggestions he lacks the experience for Aston Villa’s survival fight – but admits his new team needs an improvement.
The former Arsenal midfielder took up his first managerial role in England on Monday when he replaced the sacked Tim Sherwood at the Villa helm.
Garde admitted on Friday that while he’s not a magician, he does have strong ideas about how to keep Villa in the Premier League, while our feature earlier in the week discussed five issues the Frenchman needs to tackle at Villa Park.
“Everybody had to start something in life. I’m not a new manager,” said the former France international, who takes control for the first time against unbeaten Manchester City on Sunday, with Villa bottom of the Premier League and reeling from seven straight defeats.
“I have been in football for more than 30 years in every position. As a football player I had the chance to play for Arsenal for three years. I know the country and the way fans in England love the game.
“This is why I wanted to be back in England. Lyon play in Europe every year and I managed more than 170 games there. Sometimes experience helps you.
“Sometimes it’s not only a question of experience. I’ve got nothing against experience. One day I will be a very experienced manager, maybe.
“This is not the only thing you have to know. I’m only focused on getting to know the players. Unfortunately next week a lot will be away on international duty.”
How will Aston Villa fare under new boss Remi Garde this season?
Former Bastia coach Reginald Ray has joined as assistant manager after Villa failed in their pursuit of Garde’s former Lyon coaches Gerald Baticle and Bruno Genesio.
The midlands club have scored just 10 goals – the second lowest in the division – this season and conceded 20 and Garde, who has Micah Richards back after a ban, insisted the key to success is simple.
“Football is about scoring goals and not conceding. You have to find the right balance between the two,” the 49-year-old said.
“We need to improve in both situations. We will work out how to do it. We have started already. It’s a new start for the team and each manager has his own view on football. I will try to do my best with this team with the view I want.”
Aston Villa players enjoying football again
Remi Garde credits Aston Villa’s improved performance against Manchester City to the players enjoying their football.
Frenchman Garde, who replaced Tim Sherwood as manager, took charge of Villa for the first time as the side halted a run of seven-consecutive defeats by holding City to a 0-0 draw.
And the former Lyon boss could not hide his delight at Villa’s first Premier League point since August.
“It was a nice experience and a fantastic atmosphere. It was a tough game. I can be vey happy with my team today, I saw smiles on their faces.
“When you play with sadness it does not help you. I tried in the three training sessions we had to deliver my message. Nobody expected we were going to score two or three goals. The difference between the two teams before was huge. Making sure we were well organised defensively was my priority.
“Some of the players who didn’t start today had problems during the week. Nobody will play because he’s French or Spanish or British. I saw in training how good or bad they were.”
Despite the point, Villa remain rooted to the bottom of the table on five points, five points off 17th place Newcastle.
Man City fail in front of goal as Villa hang on
Villa remain bottom of the table and five points from safety but did at least end a seven-game losing streak after surviving a late scare when Fernando thumped the bar.
It was a deserved point for Garde while for City, on a day when rivals Arsenal were engaged in a north London derby with Tottenham, it was a case of dropping points.
Brad Guzan’s reaction stop denied Raheem Sterling, and Kevin De Bruyne missed a glorious second-half chance as City failed to find a breakthrough.
With six changes, which included dropping Jack Grealish and Joleon Lescott, Garde stamped his authority on Villa and they reacted well.
There was a renewed sense of confidence despite their run of losses, the first six of which led to former manager Tim Sherwood’s sacking.
Villa were comfortable on the ball without initially threatening and it was City who eventually conjured the first chance.
Aleksandar Kolarov had already flashed a dangerous ball across goal before Guzan almost gifted him a 17th-minute opener.
Sterling bamboozled Alan Hutton to find the overlapping Kolarov and the defender’s tame shot was scooped onto the outside of the post by Guzan.
From the corner Fernando shot over but it was the first sign City were stirring, even if they lost Wilfried Bony to injury after 24 minutes.
Despite their early composure the closest Villa came was Idrissa Gana’s rising drive which flew over Joe Hart’s bar.
Villa, though, matched City with the visitors struggling to find a rhythm and focal point without the injured Bony.
City increasingly relied on Sterling’s pace to stretch their hosts but Villa managed to keep him on a tight leash.
He was City’s best outlet and the England man wanted a penalty eight minutes before half-time when Yaya Toure set him free and he tangled with Ciaran Clark.
It looked soft and summed up City’s first-half attacking play as they laboured without the influence of the injured Sergio Aguero.
Sterling moved to the centre of the visitors’ attack during a reshuffle by Manuel Pellegrini at the break and he should have opened the scoring after 54 minutes.
Jesus Navas teased Villa on the right and produced a fine cross for the unmarked Sterling, who was denied by Guzan’s reflex save.
Replays showed the goalkeeper stopped Sterling’s six-yard header with his face but the England man should not have given the American a hope.
It was a bad miss but worse was to follow when De Bruyne failed to convert Navas’ cross from four yards after 66 minutes.
The midfielder tried to flick the ball in with his heel but only succeeded in scuffing horribly wide.
The visitors were running out of ideas and threw on Fabian Delph against his former club, with the former Villa midfielder mercilessly jeered after his summer switch.
It did little to boost City’s attacking threat but they almost claimed victory in injury time when Fernando’s header hit the bar and Delph fired the rebound wide.
Pellegrini bemoans Manchester City’s finishing
Manuel Pellegrini was unhappy with Manchester City’s finishing after his side were held to a goalless draw at Aston Villa.
City are already having to do without main striker Sergio Aguero, and lost replacement Wilfried Bony to injury after only 24 minutes of the Villa Park encounter.
The visitors largely dominated the second half, but failed to land the killer blow which would have won all three points.
“We’re disappointed with the draw. I think we did enough to win the game. They had just one shot on our goal, we had three or four clear chances to score,” Pellegrini said.
“Villa defended very well with nine or 10 players. We tried to break that line. Two or three of our chances were unlucky. This happens in football.
“Without Bony and without Sergio Aguero we don’t have a player who plays inside the box. We have to try and work without them.”
Depending on the severity of Bony’s injury, 19-year-old Kelechi Iheanacho could be handed a run in the starting XI as City’s only fit striker.

Badminton: Hungarian glory for Campbell and MacHugh
Scotland's Martin Campbell and Patrick MacHugh have won the men's doubles at the Hungarian International in Budaors.
The top seeds beat Danish second seeds Soren Gravholt and Nikolaj Overgaard 21-13 18-21 21-16 in Sunday's final.
England's Christopher Coles and Victoria Williams, who had never played or trained with each other before the tournament, won the mixed doubles.
They beat Patrick Buhl and Isabella Nielsen, of Denmark, 21-19 11-21 21-17 in 49 minutes.
Campbell and MacHugh were playing in their third final this year and the result should lift them higher than 62nd, which is their best world ranking to date.
In addition, it gives them a boost heading into the Scottish Open later this month at Glasgow's Emirates Arena.
To reach the final Campbell and MacHugh had to overcome team-mate Adam Hall and Coles in the semi-finals.
Scotland's young prospect Julie MacPherson also had a good tournament, winning two rounds of qualifying to reach the main draw of the women's singles before victories over New Zealand's sixth seed Anna Rankin 21-8 5-4 retired and Hungary's Daniella Gonda 21-10 17-21 21-16 showed her potential at senior level.
That earned her a quarter-final with third seed Chloe Birch. The England player won 21-12 21-9 on her way to the final before losing to Indonesia's fifth seed Aprilla Yuswandari 21-19 21-9.
Key stats from Goodison
There were several notable statistics to come out of Everton’s 6-2 win over Sunderland on Sunday, with Arouna Kone bringing up a landmark.
The game was notable for Tim Howard, who was making his 400th appearance for Everton, and also Gareth Barry, who moved into outright third place in the list of all-time Premier League appearance makers, but there was another landmark surprisingly reached at Goodison Park as Arouna Kone scored the 300th Premier League goal of the season with his hat-trick goal, the eighth of an astonishing game.
Opta stats
There were more goals scored in this fixture (8) than the last five top-tier clashes between Everton and Sunderland combined (7).
Black Cats’ boss Sam Allardyce has lost each of his last seven Premier League games against Everton.
The last time that Everton scored 6+ goals in a Premier League game was also against Sunderland (7-1 in Nov 2007).
Sunderland have failed to keep a clean sheet in 11 of their last 12 Premier League matches.
Romelu Lukaku has been involved in seven goals in his last five PL appearances (four goals, three assists).
Arouna Kone became the fifth Ivorian to net a Premier League hat-trick (Dindane, Drogba, Kalou,Yaya Toure), more than any other African nation.
Kone’s hat-trick goal was the 300th scored in this season’s Premier League.
Jermain Defoe has scored in five of his last eight Premier League appearances at Goodison Park against Everton.
Indeed, Defoe has bagged more away goals at Goodison Park than at any other PL ground (5).
All 19 of Everton’s Premier League goals this season have been scored in open play.
Match stats
Remarkably, considering Everton’s dominance of possession, Sunderland actually managed more shots than the hosts.
Allardyce is likely to be regretting his decision to switch to a back three for the game, but the Black Cats may well consider themselves slightly unfortunate to have lost so heavily having twice hit the post at 0-0 and then missing further late chances following the introduction of Duncan Watmore.

Dani Alves: Barcelona were framed!
The Brazilian has protested his team-mates innocence after it was reported they trashed the dressing room at Getafe on Halloween
Photos were published of a toilet cubicle covered in fake blood, with the accompanying reports accusing the Brazilian and his team-mates of behaving in a disrespectful manner at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez.

— AS English (@English_AS) November 3, 2015
The images emerged after the Barca players had been heavily criticised for interrupting Victor Rodriguez’s post-match press conference dressed in Halloween costumes.
However, while the club released a statement apologising for that prank going wrong, Alves responded angrily to the reports the changing room was trashed.
“We didn’t dirty the locker rooms like that — someone has messed it up and said it was us,” the Brazilian said after Wednesday’s 3-0 win over BATE Borisov in the Champions League.
Alves then hit out at the fall-out which has followed the players’ decision to dress up after the victory against Getafe.
“There are more important things [than the ensuing criticism]," the 32-year-old added.
"Children are starving. You have to enjoy life.”
Barca’s win over BATE puts them within a point of the next round of the last 16 in Europe, but it came at a cost with Ivan Rakitic taken off with a calf problem in the first half.
The Croatian joins Lionel Messi, Rafinha and Douglas on the sidelines, while Thomas Vermaelen, Andres Iniesta and Sergi Roberto have only just returned to action.
“It’s wear and tear after a long time competing at a high level,” Alves said about the Catalan club’s injury problems.
“It’s happening in football, not only at Barca or Real Madrid. It’s an example that we are human, not machines. So many years competing takes its toll.”
Bayern were superior to Arsenal, Cech admits
The former Chelsea goalkeeper has acknowledged the
Gunners were not good enough to hold off the German giants, but is
adamant they can still progress in Europe
Arsene Wenger's men had recorded a 2-0 win over the Bundesliga champions in the reverse fixture, but were outclassed in Munich as Bayern cruised to a 5-1 win.
"It's tough to take but in a way you have to accept that the team you were playing against was superior to us today in everything they did, especially in the first half," Cech told the official Arsenal website.
"You now need to win two games and we need to make sure that the head to head against Olympiacos is in our favour. Then you can go through.
"Everything is possible. We have two games to play, we have to regroup and continue fighting until the last minute.
"It was not a day we wanted, but every game comes thick and fast. You need to make sure that you recover and move on to the next one."
Arsenal sit fourth in Group F with three points from four games, trailing second-placed Olympiacos by six points.
Klopp & Liverpool don't need Gerrard sideshow
There are some things in football, despite its shifting landscape, which are undeniable. That Liverpool is stitched so tightly into the very fabric of Steven Gerrard
is one of those. That he stands as one of the finest figures in the
institution’s history, is another. It is why his decision to depart the
club twisted and tore.
It has only been 173 days since the 35-year-old’s hyperemotional lap of honour at Anfield, but reports on Wednesday suggested he was primed to play for his boyhood side again. Jurgen Klopp was quick to counter-press that. The offer, unchanged since May, is that Gerrard is welcome to train with Liverpool during LA Galaxy’s off-season.
The new manager already expressed that message to the midfielder, who rang to congratulate Klopp on his appointment as well as offer his support and insight. A few texts were also exchanged between the pair, with Gerrard enthused by the German’s approach and effervescence. The admiration was returned, and use of the facilities at the training complex extended.
Any other possibilities - the midfielder lacing up again at Anfield or cutting short his California experience for a coaching role at Melwood - is more the player’s wish than in line with current reality. The club have designs of integrating the iconic No. 8 into the set-up in the future, as mentioned by Liverpool chairman Tom Werner, but there remains no immediate or concrete proposals.
"There is no specific plan. We will sit down at some point just to talk about what his desires are but we are dedicated to continuing that relationship,” Werner explained in May. Gerrard has since met with the 65-year-old in LA, reiterating his desire to serve Liverpool again when required.
He also raised the prospect of learning from Klopp, adding to the notebooks he had filled with ideas from different managers. The Reds boss has not, and cannot think of such right now - he hardly has enough training time with his new team, let alone a chance to ponder future possibilities.
Klopp was categorical when asked about Gerrard in Kazan: “It’s break time and I told him ‘while you are here you can come whenever you want, you can train with us, do whatever is good for you’. Our doors are always open for him, that is clear. But nothing else. Everybody can learn from Stevie, but Stevie has a contract with LA Galaxy. He loves this club and he is a legend and we can talk about different stuff.
“But do you think he should play [for Liverpool] at this moment or next year? No? So why do you ask me? We will find something for Stevie when he comes back and whatever he wants to do we will help him, for sure, but not at this moment when we are in the middle of the season.”
Liverpool have already had their restart in this campaign. They cannot afford to tap the reset button a second time. Klopp’s priority is focusing on the players at his disposal, and Gerrard is not one of them.
His task is troublesome enough without the ‘Stevie G’ sideshow. The former captain, while a considerable asset, is a figure that too easily blurs lines. The mention of a possible playing return, although wide of the mark, was immediately met with calls for him to reclaim the Liverpool armband by some. There were predictions as to who he would automatically displace in Klopp’s starting line-up. That convinced crowd claimed that he’d be the fixer; reversing the side’s fortunes in front of goal, and remedying their home form.
Klopp was right to quickly put a full stop to such talk, which is the antithesis of his thinking. He knows that such a storyline is counterproductive, especially for a team reconstructing its confidence. In the 48-year-old’s very first training session at Melwood, he huddled the team together and delivered a short speech about how he accepted the job because he believed in their talent. Klopp reinforced the idea that they were all good enough, and that he didn’t need or want superstars as they would become exactly that.
The two-time German Football Manager of the Year has batted away an over-reliance on anyone, with the focal point very much on the collective. This is one of the reasons he has not played up Liverpool’s packed treatment room, aware that concentrating on his fit players is more productive than pining over those who are sidelined, regardless of how good or significant they are.
Gerrard’s presence on the training pitches in west Derby, although a slight distraction in terms of outside attention, would be welcomed by many inside the complex. He is still in constant contact with much of the staff and his former team-mates, regularly checking in and offering encouragement, congratulations and advice.
Despite having to drive to Carson for work since July, Gerrard has never truly left Melwood. He still religiously consumes Liverpool games as well as the media content around the club. There is not a day that passes without him wondering what is happening in L4, regardless of his commitments in LA. After 27 years at the same club, in the same city - his club, his city - the veteran is understandably still attached.
There are important talks to be had about how to welcome Gerrard back home when he retires and is ready. A role at the Academy - convincing young prospects that Kirkby is the best destination for them, and inspiring the starlets who’ve already chosen red - is a good option. Klopp, who likes to keep his coaching circle very small, could decide in the distance to bring the club’s third-highest appearance holder into that.
Gerrard wanted the chance to “breathe” after leaving Liverpool, and at the moment, the club need to exhale in the absence of his shadow. Klopp has a job to do. Liverpool have a job to do. And Gerrard has a job to do too - for LA Galaxy.

Boss: Mirallas ‘very, very important’ for Everton
The 28-year-old has not started a league game for the Toffees since the opening-weekend draw with Watford and reports this week hinted he could look elsewhere for more regular football in order to boost his quest to make Belgium’s Euro 2016 squad.
Mirallas moved to Merseyside in 2012 and in the summer he signed a new contract to keep him at the club until 2018 having scored 11 times last year.
Martinez insists the forward remains an integral part of his plans and predicts he will have a big impact for Everton in the coming months.
“It couldn’t be further from the truth,” Martinez said of the notion Mirallas was unhappy.
“Kevin has been a very, very important player while I’ve been at the football club. The start of this season has been challenging for him because he had a couple of niggles then he had the sending-off so wasn’t available for three games. But the way that he’s been working in training has been very impressive.
“He’s improved as a footballer and it’s important for us that Kevin is fresher now going into the second half of the season and we’ll get the benefit from that.
“Kevin Mirallas is a very, very important player for Everton – he knows that. What he needs now is to get playing time because the start of the season has been frustrating for him.”
Martinez also stressed that keeping Mirallas and his team-mates together will be his main mission when January comes around.
The form of this weekend’s opponents West Ham, along with Leicester and Southampton, has made the race for Europe even more competitive but Martinez will avoid the temptation to make any major changes in the transfer window.
“We’ve got such a strong squad – the focus for us is to see how good we can be with the squad we have now,” he added.
“We have enough time in the summer to see if we can bring players into the football club. All we want is to be as good as we can with the players we have, that I’m delighted with.
“It will be very important for us to make sure the window that is going to open in the winter is to just give a bit more normality, to make sure the squad gets reaffirmed, looking at the younger groups more than the first-team level to make sure that we get a clear 10-month competition out of this squad.
“It will be the summer when we reassess where we are and where we should go. I wouldn’t look at the winter as a moment to make significant changes.”
